These three entities publish the most frequently referenced codes and standards in the U.S. The American Petroleum Institute’s API 1104 is referred to as a standard, not a code. Some codes have standards built in, such as Section IX of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Nearly every job that requires inspection references a code or standard. I highly recommend that you participate in the Code Clinics offered by the American Welding Society (AWS). Understanding codes and standards is very important for becoming a welding inspector.
